Kannur University came into being by an Act passed by Kerala legislature in 1996. It is a teaching, residential and affiliating university, with its main campus in Mangattuparamba of Kannur District. The university, which has its jurisdiction in Kasaragod, Kannur, and Wayanad Districts of Kerala, is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
